Today was one of the stormiest days we have seen in awhile in Northern California.  So stormy that I postponed going to church and we stayed in jammies instead.  Drew was eager to get out and explore.  Eventually we all got our boots on, raincoats {or jack-EEETT as Drew calls it}, hats and scarves and jumped, dug in the mud and made “sand angels” in the sand box.  But before the “proper” exploration, I let Drew sneak out, in the rain to puddle stomp—barefoot and diaper clad.  The look of glee on his face was priceless.  Maybe a “bad mom” moment, but perfect.

Today was filled with LEGOS, train building, tea drinking, rain watching, Christmas carol humming, checkbook balancing, Tangled viewing, puddle stomping, hot cocoa consumption, laundry, Advent candle lighting, candle eating {DREW….}, snowflake creating {even made Chewbacca!} and picnic lunch munching in the play room.  It was busy and yet just “another day”.  As I settled into the evening service tonight and the strains of O Come, O Come Emmanuel began, the words reminded me of the darkness that begins this Advent season.  The songwriter pleas for the gloomy clouds of night to be dispersed.  This sentiment is Advent.  The understanding that while we are sitting in deep darkness there is a light that shines nonetheless.  Drew reminded me today that in the midst of everyday life, especially during the storms we face, we are called to STOMP in the puddles, lift our faces to the rain, let go of the rules & cling to the light to come.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined.”

~Isaiah 9:2

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.

Refrain:
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight. (Refrain)

O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid envy, strife, and discord cease;
Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.
